The creation of La Poderosa 640am & Interferencia 810am...
La Poderosa 640am has it’s origins on September 20, 2004 when Efrain Cano, our General Director and creator of La Poderosa 640am ,moved from Chicago to Grand Rapids, MI.
His first stop was to work for one of the our current Hispanic competitor’s radio stations, in only few weeks becoming the main radio announcer of this radio station reaching 1.8 of rating.
Efrain, in a short period of time, realized that none of the radio stations in West Michigan were really connected with our Spanish community, in other words, the music played was not what the listeners wanted to hear. None of the radio stations were making an effort to organize festivals. None of them went out and broadcasted live from where the listeners live, or promoted activities that interested our Spanish community.
That’s why Efrain Cano decided to create La Poderosa, that in its initial days was 810am. It was his intention to satisfy our Spanish community radio preference needs, focusing only on “Regional Mexican Music.”
In the first weeks La Poderosa 810am (now 640am) was on the air, we only had 2 CD players for music and another CD for commercials. The location of the radio was in an abandoned house in Rockford where urgent repairs were needed as soon as possible and with a very limited budget to carry out all of those repairs. Efrain’s listeners, thankful for his work at the radio and his reaching out to the community, offered to help fix the place without expecting anything in return.
In these 5 years of operation, La Poderosa has been positioned as the Hispanic radio stations with highest rating, providing genuine regional Mexican music and being able to bring some of those Mexican bands to play live to the West-Michigan. But on the hand, there was another Hispanic segment not reached yet by La Poderosa 640am. Therefore, in view of this situation, last year Efrain acquired another radio stations called “Interferencia 810am” offering Rock Pop music, being focus on the Latin-American and Caribbean market. The success has been of such great magnitude that we have turned into the most listened to radio stations in the Mid-West. This success is due primarily to the following reasons.
Our goal is to grow continuously and keep proving the best programming along with varied music to our listeners, We have a great commitment to be the number 1 radio station in the Mid-West. This encourages us to keep striving every day innovating with great entertainment.
